Care Tips

We select our fabric from New Zealand’s leading fabric houses that in turn source them from mills all over the world. This means we have a fantastic selection of high quality products from which to choose your home décor solution. Each fabric, because of its different composition, comes with its own inherent qualities and characteristics and below is some useful information regarding fabrics and how to care for them.

Fabric texture

Many of the fabrics we use, whether for window treatments or upholstery, have been manufactured using natural fibres. Any slubs, irregularities and impurities are characteristic of the yarn and enhance the nature of the fabric. Appreciate fabrictexture_1_.JPG for its unique character as the inconsistencies do not reduce the quality but rather add to its integrity. All fabrics are susceptible to some movement and shrinkage, particularly in humid conditions. Please be assured that when we measure and make your curtains, we take this movement into account, for example linen fabrics should always be touching the ground.

Fabric dye batch

While the fabric manufacturers take great care to ensure dye batches are true to samples, there may be a slight variation between batches.

Fabric fading

All fabrics are susceptible to fading, regardless of the fibres or dyes used and will deteriorate under direct sunlight or reflected ultra-violet light. However the fabrics we recommend utilise the highest quality materials and whilst no warranty can be made as to fastness, because of New Zealand’s extreme ultra-violet conditions, they should give satisfactory service under normal conditions provided proper care is taken. We use superior quality linings to ensure longevity of life for your curtains and upholstery.

Leading edges of curtains (those facing the windows) are particularly vulnerable to fading. To help minimise this effect, we recommend that you periodically rotate your curtains where possible.

A quality sunfilter drape or ultra-violet film applied to the windows is also important where sun is directly reflecting on the fabric behind the glass.

Some yarns, such as silks, are extremely susceptible to indirect ultra-violet rays and we will advise you on how to protect these fabrics by the use of bumphs, inter-linings and conventional linings. Even then, fading may still occur over time.

Cleaning instructions

Where possible, our curtain fitter will hang your window treatments at least 10 cm from the glass. This enables air to circulate and helps prevent mildew. It also reduces heat buildup which can adversely affect fabric. Regular cleaning of windows is also very beneficial as this removes mildew spores which can accumulate and transfer onto curtains.

Remove hooks, rings and trims before cleaning. We recommend you use professional curtain drycleaners on all curtains and upholstery to minimise shrinkage and extend life. Do not allow dust to accumulate. Regularly and gently vacuum with appropriate attachment on all curtains and upholstery.
